The Macallan

image-sample-4

The Macallan is the most respected and revered whisky in the world. This legendary single malt has more awards and accolades than any other.

Brand History

‘The Macallan’ is most likely derived from two Gaelic words, ‘MAGH’ meaning a fertile piece of ground and ‘ELLAN’, meaning ‘of St Fillan’, an Irish born monk who travelled widely in Scotland spreading Christianity during the eighth century.

In 1824, Alexander Reid, a local Farmer, obtained a licence to distil whisky, one of the first in Scotland, and leased eight acres from the Earl of Seafield to establish a distillery bordering the river Spey, one of Scotland’s most famous salmon rivers. Reid was known for his advanced methods of farming and for the superior quality of his whisky, which became The Macallan.

The earliest known bottle of The Macallan was distilled in 1841 and is held today at the distillery. Throughout the 20th century, The Macallan grew to become one of the world’s most awarded and admired single malt Scotch whiskies.

In 1999, The Edrington Group, which for many years had close ties with The Macallan, purchased a majority shareholding.

Whats Unique about The Macallan?

Key Tenets

  • Casks. 'The Macallan' is made from malt whisky stored in carefully selected casks, which have previously held Sherry or Bourbon. Only casks of the highest quality receive 'The Macallan’s' precious spirit.
  • Golden Promise. At 'The Macallan' a barley variety called Golden Promise is used. Difficult and expensive to grow but vital to the rich, sensuous character of 'The Macallan'.
  • Singularly Complex Fermentation. A blend of fresh yeasts is used in every fermentation, which enhances the complexity and character of the spirit.
  • The Finest Cut. During distillation, 'The Macallan' takes a smaller proportion of distilled spirit – known as the ‘cut’, than any other distiller.

Brand Principles

  • Consistent and demonstrable ‘best in class’ quality
  • Understated, stylish packaging.
  • A wide range of ages to suit any connoisseur.
